Forth Road Bridge hack redirects to smut bazaar
Updated Hackers turned the Forth Road Bridge website into a filth jamboree after breaking into its systems to plant script designed to redirect surfers to a Turkish site hosting malware. According to Scottish security outfit Roundtrip Solutions the website of the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (www.feta.gov.uk), which runs the famous suspension bridge in central Scotland, was hacked in order to serve up pop-up ads for porn sites. Roundtrip used AVG's LinkScanner security tool to determine that hackers were taking advantage of the (old and a little obscure) MDAC-RDS ActiveX exploit to launch an iFrame HTML element taken from a website under the control of hackers. .
Police warning over new key-logging 'Trojan' spam emails
Police are warning internet users about 'Trojan' emails containing links to malicious websites that can steal sensitive information such as PINs and password log-ins from vulnerable PCs. The UK's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) said the spam emails contain details of a fictitious order for web hosting or computer goods and display the cost that will supposedly be charged to their credit card. The email also contains a link to a website to view the order in more detail but if people click on the link, it takes them to a malicious website that allows hackers to steal data from their PC. The user is presented with a site that appears to be under construction but an exploit for a security flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser allows the criminals to plant a key-logging Trojan on an unpatched PC.
As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs. The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks. "These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said. The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.
