As a voice is stilled, memories are stirred

IT WAS THE spring of 1977. I was 12 years old, living in Landover, pondering my upcoming ascent to high school and sitting at a crossroads. I needed a baseball team to call my own, and it was obvious by then, six years after the Senators moved, that my hometown was not going to provide me with one.

I swallowed hard and told myself, "It's the Orioles or nothing." One night soon after, on the transistor next to my bed, I tuned in the D.C. station carrying the games. Guess who was there to welcome me to Orioles baseball, to Memorial Stadium and to Baltimore?

Chuck Thompson, of course. The franchise couldn't have asked for a better salesman. For that matter, neither could the city itself. I couldn't have asked for a better escort into this new, unexplored territory.

Russia votes for Putin's puppet

Moviegoer Jim Montalbano of Queens celebrates the 75th anniversary of the original "King Kong" premiere at Radio City saying he has always been a big fan of the film. "I saw the gorilla and fell in love," he gushes.

In other words: He's one hot hunk-a gorilla! The matted, lice-infested fur, those jagged fingernails, the stench of rotting vegetation on his breath. Oh, Kongie, I'll always be yours.

The story: Hillary bashes Obama for being flip-floppy when talking about Canada and free trade. Says Hillary, "I don't think people should come to Ohio and tell the people of Ohio one thing and then have your campaign tell a foreign government something else behind closed doors. It looks a little like the 'the old wink wink.'"

In other words: Wink wink is not acceptable.

Students found inter-religious council

The council will provide new informational services for all students on campus through weekly e-mails, a single calendar for all religious campus events and a Web site that provides directory information for student religious leaders.

In addition to working closely with the Chaplain's office, organizers said they hope to collaborate with the Religious Studies Department.

The group differs from the existing Multi-Faith Council, which brings together students of different religious backgrounds for discussions and University-wide religious event planning, Kugler said.

While the specifics of many of the council's plans have not yet been decided, she said she is excited about the group's potential to draw together students from across all religious traditions.

Britney Spears Reportedly Runs Red Light; Plus Weezer, Chamillionaire ...

Britney Spears fans must be asking themselves why the singer risks getting behind the wheel anymore. According to a video posted on TMZ.com, the singer blew through a red light and made an illegal turn against oncoming traffic, with her two sons in the backseat of her Mercedes as she was driving in Los Angeles on Thursday. The footage also apparently shows Spears' court-appointed monitor ducking in the passenger seat. The video came to light following Thursday's emergency hearing in her child-custody dispute with Kevin Federline, her ex-husband. Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan hadn't seen the footage by the time the hearing commenced, and there's no word yet if this will affect his motion to prevent Spears from driving with her kids. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told MTV News on Friday that authorities weren't planning to cite Spears with any traffic violations because they hadn't been made aware of any unsafe left turns.

McLaren sets very high bar as hubby

Every February he goes to the FBR Open in Scottsdale and enjoys the crowd spectacle at the 16th hole.

Many years ago on an off-day in Oakland, Ken Griffey Jr. lined up limos to take players and coaches to Pebble Beach, and McLaren passed because he had yet to take up the game. He said he'd die to play there now.

There are perks to being a big league manager. McLaren was playing with a friend at Blackstone Country Club last week, and after they finished their round, the head guy pulled him aside and gave him a membership, waiving the $75,000 initiation fee. McLaren couldn't believe it.

"I've always wanted to be part of a country club," he said.

When he's not golfing or managing, McLaren is most apt to be at home reading the paper, messing around on the computer or watching ESPN.
