Good Evening. I want to welcome you to the 2008 State of the City Address and thank you for the opportunity to update the community on the status and condition of our fine City. I want to personally thank all of you for attending this event in our newest facility and sincerely thank all of the members of the Department of Public Services who have helped us put this evening together. We have never held the address outside of city hall but I felt it would be a great opportunity to showcase our newest facility to the people who own it, our residents. This required a tremendous amount of effort from a large number of city employees and I sincerely appreciate it. Don't complain though, if you think this is different, next year I want to hold the State of the City -- underwater! I also want to recognize some very important people in the room tonight.
Words fly between La Russa and Slaten
But a skirmish between Cards manager Tony La Russa and talk-show host Kevin Slaten is simmering. Slaten wanted La Russa to be a guest recently on his afternoon drive-time program at KFNS (590 AM, 100.7 FM) but La Russa turned him down — as he has in the past.
Slaten has been harsh on the air about La Russa, lately about him overseeing many players who have been tied to using performance-enhancing substances — including players who have been signed by the club after the release this winter of the Mitchell Report, which investigated use of such substances in baseball. .

Two major fast-food chains, Jack-In-the-Box and In-N-Out, said they would not use beef from Westland/Hallmark. The recall affects beef products dating back to February 1, 2006. Most of the beef has been eaten and officials say it's unlikely the remaining beef is tainted. No illness has been reported, but it wasn't properly inspected and therefore is unfit for human consumption. The spindles on the drop-side of the crib could come loose, leaving a gap that could potentially trap and strangle a child. The company is voluntarily recalling the cribs and no injuries have been reported.
State offers help after oil company closes
WATERBURY (AP) The state is offering to help 12,000 customers of a Waterbury oil company that abruptly went out of business and left many people with pre-paid contracts in limbo. Gov. M. Jodi Rell says state investigators will go to the headquarters of F. and S. Oil Company first thing on Monday to demand access to its business records. She says the state will also seek a court-appointed receiver to audit the records, and go after any funds that may be missing. State officials will see if they can freeze the company's assets and return money to thousands of customers with pre-buy contracts. Rell also says her office will work to set up oil deliveries by other companies to F. and S. customers to make sure no one goes without heat. The state says F. and S. customers can call a state hot line at 1-800-842-2649 beginning Monday morning.
