The CNN Wire: Wednesday, Nov. 28
Chinese authorities cancelled a scheduled Thanksgiving port call in Hong Kong for the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk just hours before it was supposed to dock. The cancellation was "a costly inconvenience to the families who had traveled there to spend Thanksgiving with their loved ones on board," Morrell said. (Posted 8:12 p.m.) Broadway stagehands could reach agreement to end strike soon NEW YORK (CNN) -- The lights may shine brightly again soon on Broadway if optimism from both sides in the stagehands' contract negotiations proves warranted. After more than 10 hours of talking Wednesday, the two sides were still meeting at 7:15 p.m., and both the League of American Theatres and Producers and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees told CNN they were optimistic for a settlement.
HD DVD May Finally Be Dead... Only Three Years Too Late
Then there was MiniDisc, the DVD Recorder, XM Radio. So it's great to see Sony making it's way back at the helm again. I read something about Apple possibly buying Sony. My advice: Go for it. (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) Re: Amnesia? by Iron Chef on Feb 18th, 2008 @ 1:53am My only ask is that you bring Carl Yankowski back on board to oversee the Operations Side of the house. Assuming he wants it, that is. (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) by Gunnar on Feb 18th, 2008 @ 3:45am All I'll say is that I can still barely stream YouTube videos on my crappy dsl connection, and when I do I have to stop whatever else I'm doing online until it finishes downloading. While I agree that Internet video is in the future, both the delivery capacity and, more importantly, the mindsets of people who want to own something physical have to change before the optical disc format has to worry.
Moves Already
Hopefully Smith will sign and the rumors are true and the 49ers are attempting to sign Lance Briggs. They don't have to wait for the draft to get wide recievers, Javon Walker, Jerome Mathis, Jabar Gaffney are solid recievers who would not be a financial risk on the 49ers becuase I don't see any of the recievers signed last year as showing any more promise than from their original teams. Calvin Pace is out thier who had a great season and plays in the 3-4 scheme which would be a good fit next to Willis. The good thing is that they were able to resign the players they needed without killing thier cap space. Deshaun Foster and Thomas were good pickups becuase they will both be backups and they did not cost that much to sign. Hopefully they sign at least two big names during this offseason. They need some football players in the front seven.

Will 'Amnesty' Sink McCain?
The perennial controversy over what to call McCain's amnesty is silly. Every program in the world that has allowed illegal immigrants to stay has been called an "amnesty." McCain himself called it "amnesty" as recently as May 2003, when he told the Tucson Citizen "I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible … Amnesty has to be an important part ..." But once the focus-group results were in, "amnesty" became a four-letter word. ...[snip] Real Straight Talk would be to say "Sure, it's an amnesty, but we don't really have any choice" ... P.S.: The McCain, post-focus-group argument is that it can't be "amnesty" if it has some requirements--e.g., to pay a fine, learn English, etc. But it turns out that Ronald Reagan's 1986 "comprehensive" reform, which he and everyone else called an "amnesty," had requirements too, including payment of fees.
MSU men: Still time to right ship
To be sure, the Montana State men's basketball team doesn't want to let this thing get any further away from them. And the luster of a 16-point rout of Montana has faded in the haze of three consecutive defeats, the last one, Thursday's 78-76 loss to Weber State, came at home - the Bobcats' first loss at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse this winter. Then again, the senior-laden team is savvy enough to know that every season has its ebb and flow, and perhaps the 'Cats (9-8, 1-3) were due."I'm old - I've been through it all," senior guard Carlos Taylor said. "You aren't going to see my head down."After all, there's so much basketball still to be played, starting with tonight's key 7:05 o'clock game with feisty Idaho State (6-11, 3-1), which is fresh from a 56-54 win at Montana. There's still time to right a semi-listing ship for a team that once looked like Big Sky Conference contenders."And I still think they are," Weber State coach Randy Rahe said after what he described as a "huge" road win.
Man trapped in grain bin dies
Emergency personnel tried to rescue a Tonica man trapped in a Utica soybean bin Friday morning but were unable to save his life. Harold Paul Beenenga, 56, was working at Utica Elevator and helping load a semi when the accident occurred around 9 a.m. It remained unclear how Beenenga became trapped. However, Utica police chief Joe Bernardoni said Beenenga and co-worker Jerry Carey had portable radios and had been communicating back and forth, but lost contact while Beenenga was in the bin, approximately 10 feet off the ground by Bernardoni's estimate. Workers called into the bin trying to get a response from Beenenga, but there was no reply or sign of life. .
Taking the leap: Feb. 29 is becoming the big day for couples
Miller, 45, is still tweaking the fine print. "Well, yes, we'll do a big celebration every four years, but in between those years, we'll do something small and special, either Feb. 28 or March 1," Miller says with a wink in her tone. Tammy Degroot, a file clerk in the Macomb County Clerk's office, says the anniversary date question has even come up with the couples she's helped. "I had a bride ask, 'When do we celebrate our anniversary?' and I told her that was up to her and her husband-to-be. I think that's the point. You get to choose," Degroot says. Mary Green, who co-owns Victoria Wedding Chapel in Waterford Township, tells a similar tale. "Four years ago, I had a bride get married on Leap Day and just before she walked down the aisle, she turned to me in a mild panic and said 'Wait a minute.

This is the lowest council tax increase ever, we are delivering real value for money for the taxpayer and we have shown that we have listened carefully to the views of residents. "We have undergone the most wide-ranging and comprehensive consultation ever and taken on board the vast majority of things that residents have told us are important." But Labour group leader Councillor June Bridle said: "Their proposals give a small handout to few pensioners at the expense of massive attack on families." She added: "Some services are being stripped back to the bone. They are leaving some small amounts of money which means services are almost unviable." Liberal Democrat group leader Councillor Adrian Vinson said: "It's a bad budget A budget of gimmicks and stunts which hits key services.
