Apple Files Five Major Touch Screen Patents
On February 21, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a powerful series of Touch screen related patent applications from Apple Inc. respectfully titled Touch Sensing Architecture, '>Typing with a Touch Sensor, Writing using a Touch Sensor, Touch Sensing through Hand Dissection and '>Contact Tracking and Identification Module for Touch Sensing. Although all five applications share a common patent abstract and summary, the patents do in fact present their unique distinctive presentations in the second half of each of these patents. All five applications share a common set of 55 patent figures with one that clearly illustrates a full computer touch screen based keyboard in the works. Apple's Abstract Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger and palm contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, multi-touch surface.

Today, with vitamin D so much in the news, it's hard to believe that it took decades for the Garlands' hypothesis to gain traction in the mainstream medical community. But the benefits of vitamin D are no longer restricted to cancer prevention: Studies have linked a shortage of the compound to such serious, chronic ailments as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, influenza and schizophrenia. Cedric Garland, now a professor of preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego, is so convinced of this broad link that he says, "I think vitamin D is introducing a golden age in medicine." And he's not alone. So compelling is the latest research that a number of credible medical researchers and public-health advocates, many of them in Canada, have started taking doses far above 200 to 600 international units - the daily intake recommended by Health Canada, depending on age with an upper limit of 2,000 IU.

In the meet-opening swim, the 800-yard freestyle relay, a University of Kansas quartet set the Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium record with a time of 7:29.42. Kenyon's entry in the same event placed third with a time of 7:30.78, which was a new College record. The Ladies responsible for that time were Lauren Brady (Tyngsboro, MA/Phillips Exeter), Tina Ertel (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Rebecca Wenzlau (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior), and Danielle Arad (Yorba Linda, CA/Tarbut V'Torah). They erased the old Kenyon mark of 7:33.38 set at the 2004 Division III national championship meet. It went without saying that the time was also good for automatic qualification into this season's NCAA DIII Championship.
